Project Overview
This customer had recently had his rear garden paved and new fencing fitted. However, he was keen to have an area for his grandchildren to play safely. The excavation was already there due to the paving work. We filled the deep hole with Stone then blinded the top with Grano, which gives the area suitable drainage. Site Assessment and Drainage Strategy
This Warrington customer had recent paving and fencing work completed but faced an unexpected opportunity: a deep excavation left from the paving work. Rather than filling it with standard soil, the customer recognised this as the perfect foundation for a safe, child-friendly play area. Young grandchildren needed a space where they could run, play, and explore without muddy shoes or wet grass concerns.
Building the Foundation
The existing excavation provided an ideal opportunity to create excellent drainage beneath the artificial grass. We filled the deep hole with stone aggregate material, which acts as the primary drainage layer. On top of this stone base, we spread granite dust (grano) and compacted it carefully to create a firm, level surface with natural water permeability. This two-tier base—stone aggregate below, compacted grano on top—ensures that water will always drain away rapidly, keeping the grass dry even after heavy rain.
Grass Installation and Safety

The grass was laid over a professional weed membrane that prevents unwanted growth whilst allowing water to permeate downward into the drainage layers.
