Project Overview

Artificial grass for flooded gardens can be a great solution. In this customer story, Liam was beside himself with what to do with his flooded garden. He had kids who loved to play both Football and Rugby, but for big chunks of the year could not play anything in the garden. This particular artificial grass installation was in Widnes. Widnes like other towns in the North West of England gets plenty of rain, meaning Liam's garden remained flooded for most of the year... Rob suggested that during the initial digging up and groundwork phase they can install a land drain which drains into a soakaway pit. Generally, artificial grass for flooded gardens is a great solution because the artificial grass is installed upon aggregate which is a layer that helps to drain the water that sits below the sharp sand.

Site Assessment and Drainage Solution

Liam's garden in Widnes had suffered from persistent flooding throughout the year, making it impossible for his children to play outside safely during wet weather. The heavy rainfall typical of the North West had saturated the ground repeatedly, turning the garden into a muddy, waterlogged mess. We began with a thorough site survey to understand the drainage challenges and the existing ground structure.

Installation Process

The solution involved installing a land drain system that would carry water away from the main playing area into a dedicated soakaway pit. This underground drainage network ensures that water drains quickly away from the grass surface, even during heavy rain. Below the artificial turf, we laid a thick layer of aggregate—gravel and stone materials that naturally promote rapid water permeation. On top of this drainage layer, we applied granite dust (grano) which was carefully compacted to create a stable base for the grass installation.

Materials Used

The turf itself was installed over a professional geotextile membrane, which prevents soil mixing with the aggregate layer whilst allowing water to pass through freely. High-quality artificial grass was chosen specifically for its durability in high-traffic family environments. Joining tape and adhesive sealed the seams, creating a seamless surface that looks natural and professional.

The Outcome

The result is a game-changer for this young family. Liam's children can now enjoy football and rugby in the garden throughout the year, regardless of rainfall. The grass remains dry underfoot even after heavy downpours, thanks to the integrated drainage system. The family has gained back their outdoor space and the freedom to play without worrying about flooding or mud. If you have a garden plagued by waterlogging or poor drainage, artificial grass with proper base preparation can transform your space.
